A novel design of a lens having a variable focal length is described. An electric field which has an intensity distribution and is inclined in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the incident light is applied to an electrooptical crystal in order to produce a refractive index distribution with a lens effect in the crystal. The focal length of the lens effect is varied by varying the applied electric field.
