<p>A battening apparatus for use in combination with the hatch covers aboard ships or the like, comprising a hook member (8) which at one end is adapted to engage a peg (3) on the cover and, at a distance from the said end, through a link (13) is mounted for rotation about a pivot (4) located on the coaming (1) of the hatch and is connected to a power source (6, 7) through the said link, the pivot (4) on the coaming being located substantially directly below the cover peg (3), and the link (13) being adapted to, during the battening operation of the apparatus to pass with its connection point (12) between the hook member and the link through an extension of a line through the axes of the cover peg and of the coaming pivot, whereby the top portion (9) of the hook member initially is passed at a distance above the cover peg (3) and then be moved substantially rectilinearly at right angles to the hatch coaming relatively to the cover peg (3). A spring (21) is mounted between the hook member (8) and the hatch coaming (1), which spring at all times exercises a torque on the hook member directed towards the cover peg (3). The leg (10) of the hook member has a non-circular section for the purpose of preventing rotation in the block (11) supporting the connecting point (12). The position of the block (11) on the leg of the hook member is adjustable by means of a nut (15) on the leg (10) between the block (11) and an abutment or the like (16) secured to the block.</p> |
