The invention relates to a process for the discontinuous decatising of woven and knitted fabrics and the like on a decatising machine with at least one decatising cylinder, on which the undercloth and the untreated fabric are wound to form a roll and this is thereafter subjected to a steaming operation and to a subsequent suction operation. In order to increase the lifetime of the undercloth and consequently reduce the cost outlay for renewing the undercloth, it is proposed, according to the invention, to dehumidify the undercloth during the winding operation. In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the dehumidification of the undercloth takes place by connecting the decatising cylinder to a vacuum source, for example to a suction blower. As a result of the method according to the invention, moisture is extracted from the undercloth during the winding operation without the need for special heating devices, whilst the untreated fabric simultaneously experiences an increase in moisture inasmuch as the fabric, more hygroscopic by far than the undercloth, absorbs some of the moisture of the undercloth by the "blotting-paper process".
