For the purpose of continuously measuring the cross-sectional surface of continuous profiled billets, the profiled billets are moved through a compressed air zone, and the air quantity they displace in the process is continuously measured and used to control or readjust the profile cross-section. The measuring device has a matrix-like nozzle, through which the profiled billets pass in a contactless fashion, and which has an inlet for compressed air and an outlet for compressed air that does not flow out through the nozzle opening. The amount of compressed air flowing from the outlet is measured and forms a measure of the cross-sectional surface of the profiled billets.
