The invention deals with brake magnets for electricity meters having an essentially U-shaped carrier body (1) at the legs of which one or more permanent magnet bodies (2, 3), which are magnetised with one or more tracks, of highly coercive permanent-magnet alloy are mounted, forming a working air gap (4) through which the magnetic fluxes of the permanent-magnet bodies pass, for a brake disc. At least one of the permanent-magnet bodies (2, 3) is provided on one side with a temperature compensation member (5) of hard ferrite which can consist of barium ferrite or barium strontium ferrite - either in solid form or in a compound with plastic. This very greatly reduces the influence of temperature fluctuations on the braking torque of the brake magnet, and the braking power can be finally calibrated by an adjustable shunt body (6) which is arranged on one side of one of the permanent-magnet bodies (2, 3) in parallel with the yoke (1a) of the U-shaped carrier body (1). <IMAGE>
