An athletic shoe constructed to inhibit ankle injuries is disclosed. The shoe is in the form of a "high cut" or ankle boot with a tensioning band (20) anchored to the outside of the boot, along the sole (12), rearwardly of the transverse tarsal joint. In use, the band extends over the dorsal surface of the shoe to the inside of the ankle where it is fastened under tension.
