2,3-Dichloro-4-(2- thenoyl)phenoxyacetic acid (a diuretic) is prepared by diesterifying 3-(2,3- dichlorophenoxy)-1,2-propane diol and reacting the resultant ester with thenoyl chloride or bromide under Friedel-Crafts conditions to give the corresponding ester of 3-(2,3- dichloro-4-(2-thenoyl)phenoxy)-1,2- propane diol, which is optionally hydrolysed to the diol and oxidised. The intermediates provided by the invention are the diol starting material and cyclic esters thereof, and the 4- (2-thenoyl)analogues thereof. |
