The system consists of an upstream goods reception section (13) with conveyor belt (9), a downstream discharge section (14) and an intermediate conveyor (20) with horizontal transport surface. Code markings e.g. barcodes, on goods are read by an optical e.g. laser, scanner (25) adjacent to the conveyor, which is coupled via a computer to the cash register (27). The conveyor consists of a flat transparent annular plate (21) which rotates so that the goods, arranged with the code information face-downwards, can be registered by optical reading system through a window (26). The laser scanner is controlled by two optical actuating systems producing an IR beam (28) in advance of and one (29) after the window. Laser emission is produced in the time between breaking of the two paths between sources mounted in a block (33) and detectors mounted in the opposite wall. An operator (at 12) picks up goods from the upstream conveyor (9) and having noted the position of the bar code places the item onto the conveying plate (at point A). Code information is read and goods discharged into the downstream section the operator only needing to move items over a short distance. |
