<p>A portable mass spectrometer comprises a power pack C and a hand held probe P, the probe comprising a gas inlet 13 with a porous membrane 14, an ion source 15 which can also function as an ion pump, a quadrupole ion filter 16, an ion detector 17 and a chemical getter G to provide a vacuum within the probe. The spectrometer is intended for detecting chemicals in remote areas and does not require a conventional vacuum system. Valves 12 and 21 are provided on the probe P and getter G respectively, both valves being opened when these two parts are engaged. <IMAGE></p> |
