Method for detecting a position of a moving body is disclosed. A pulse generator for generating pulse signals representing a unit amount of movement of the moving body and a reference signal generator for generating a reference signal when the moving body has reached a reference region are provided. Numbers are presets corresponding to predetermined positions of the moving body within the reference region and one of the predetermined positions is selected as a reference position. The pulse signals are counted with reference to the reference number corresponding to the reference position to represent the predetermined positions of the moving body by the pulse counts. The pulse count is compared with the preset numbers to detect the positions of the moving body.
