The invention relates to a power amplifier which can be used in amplifier stages for music and speech signals. The object of the invention is to produce a simply designed power amplifier which is protected against short circuit at the output of the output amplifier (II) and against inductive load and has minimal non-linear distortion. The essence of the invention lies in a simple circuit structure and controlled operation of the output amplifier (II), the latter taking on the task of protection as well as the amplification functions, i.e. the output amplifier is designed in such a way that it protects itself against short circuit at the output of the output amplifier and against inductive load. A balanced double-action amplifier which contains an npn transistor and a pnp transistor is inserted between the output of the balanced double-action pre-amplifier and the inputs of the class B + C double-action output amplifier. The power amplifier according to the invention is insensitive to temperature fluctuations, the class B + C output amplifier stage has, in particular at high power, simple circuitry. No special circuits are required to protect against short circuit and inductive load. Furthermore, non-linear distortion is reduced in the output amplifier.
