Olefin polymers are manufd. in vertical fluidized bed reactors of uniform diam. and variable bed height contg. an indirect cooler. The reactor is operated without a velocity redn. zone or a cyclone to sep. fine particles from the gas. Thus, ethylene was copolymd. with 1-butene or propylene in a 26.5ft tall fluidized-bed reactor with inner diam. 13.5 in. contg. an internal cooler consisting of 4 vertical loops 4ft long of 1 in. diam. stainless steel tubing through which tempered water was passed. The catalyst used was a high activity Cr- and(or) Ti-contg. catalyst.
