ELECTROLYTIC CELL FOR AQUEOUS ALKALI CHLORIDE SOLUTION

PURPOSE:To provide a titled electrolytic cell which suppresses deposition of caustic alkali in a cation exchange membrane by coating the surface part in the upper part of said membrane on the cathode side of the part where the chlorine gas in the upper part of the anode chamber is apt to stagnate with an uncalcined tape of non-hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene in tight contact therewith. CONSTITUTION:The surface part of a cation exchange membrane in the upper part on the above-mentioned cathode chamber side is coated with an uncalcined tape of non-hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE green tape) in tight contact therewith. This PTFE green tape is made generally by rolling a mixture of an emulsion polymer of PTFE and prime white oil or the like to a tape shape then allowing the prime white oil or the like to evaporate. The cation exchange membrane is formed of a fluorine-contg. high polymer material of which the ion exchange groups are sulfonic acid groups, carboxylic acid groups or their derivatives. Further the above-mentioned construction is adaptable to an electrolytic cell of either of filter press type or finger type.
