The digitally controlled turning machine includes a milling carriage sliding on rails parallel to the axis of the plate on which the work piece is to turn. The rails are separate from those on which the turning mechanism slides. The milling carriage supports a working head which has a rotating tool carrier with an automatic tool locking device linked to the machine drive. An angular position detector is also provided to enable the head to be locked in a precise angular position. The machine also includes a set of tools and a tool changer operating under the control of the machine to transfer tools from the working head into the storage position and vice versa. The rails for the turning mechanism and the milling carriage may be on the lower and front surfaces of a single box-section running along the machine.
