Light olefin oligomerisation - using boron tri:fluoride catalyst on alumina support

Light olefin fractions or their mixts. are oligomerised in the presence of a BF3 catalyst on an alumina support of low specific surface and low pore volume. The specific surface is pref. 20-120, esp. 40-100 m2/g and the pore volume is pref. 0.10-0.80, esp. 0.20-0.50 cc/g. The supported catalyst is also claimed. Pref. the specific surface and pore volume of the alumina support are adjusted by controlling the duration and temp. of calcination of a coarse support. Oligomerisation is at 30-130 deg.C and 10-50 bars. Pref. olefins comprise mainly propylene and/or butenes. The catalyst is cheap and easy to charge and gives low boiling oligomers with improved selectivity while limiting formation of high boiling polymsn. residues.
