Within the bladder, the inner end of the catheter carries an inflatable balloon piped to the exterior for inflation and deflation. The outer surface of the flexible catheter tube is formed so that it will spread a fluid between the tube surface and the inner face of the urethra. Pref. the tube surface has one or more helical grooves which be supplied with antiseptic or antibiotic solns. from an external inlet pipe. The soln. flushes the space between the catheter and the urethral passage wall and prevents infection of bladder, prostate or urethra.
