On use of conventional sunscreen compositions for the human skin, cutaneous irritation with the clinical picture of folliculitis has been observed. The invention indicates a sunscreen composition in the form of a cosmetically effective gel which, in contrast to known sunscreen compositions, contains no surfactants (emulsifiers) and lipids and, on use before the exposure to light, expediently contains small amounts of water-soluble or oil-soluble UV filter substances and can be water-soluble or water-repelling on the basis of volatile mineral oils. Conventional thickening agents can be employed to prepare the gel. It is possible with the sunscreen composition according to the invention to avoid the upsetting cutaneous irritation. In addition, the sunscreen composition according to the invention has surprisingly high sunscreen factors.
