In a process for treating fuel, for example peat, which contains colloid and chemically bound water, the fuel is first dehydrated down to a water content within a first range. Heated water is then passed through the peat mass in a preheater (2) and removed from the peat mass. The preheated peat mass is then fed to a reactor (7) in which it is heated by hot water up to a temperature at which the colloidal water is completely released, while the water chemically bound to the fuel essentially remains. The fuel should be heated very rapidly. The resulting fuel product is then dehydrated under the reaction pressure. <IMAGE>
