As the surfaces on which tennis is usually played indoors or on hard courts are generally very unyielding and make it virtually impossible for players to slide onto the ball as they strike it, as they usually do in open-air tennis, tennis shoes with optimum sliding characteristics have been developed, the soles of which are provided with hemispherical recesses, into which hard rubber balls are mounted and are symmetrically covered by a covering plate so as to leave apertures, which are open at the top, for the sections, which project slightly beyond the surface of the sole, of the individual balls which are thus mounted in an easily rotatable manner. This means that the ball roller layer produced in the soles permits players to slide on to the ball with ease when they are striking it, even on the hardest of surfaces, as they would in outdoor tennis.
