A surface-mounted operating mechanism for a bell having a lower part (which is intended for attachment to a wall or the like, has screw holes for the attachment screws, and supports stationary contacts of a push-button switch and, optionally, a tube lamp for illuminating a nameplate), having a covering cap (which can be pushed onto the lower part, covers said lower part on all sides like a cap and has a recess) and having a push button, which is arranged in the recess, can be pivoted in the direction of the lower part against the force of a spring in order to operate the switch and is at the same time constructed as a support for the nameplate, the push button being supported such that it can pivot in such a manner that it can be pivoted on the one hand in the direction of the lower part in order to operate the switch and on the other hand away from the lower part for insertion or replacement of the nameplate through the recess in the covering cap, without dismantling the covering cap, in such a manner that a locking device is arranged on the lower part and/or on the covering cap, which locking device acts on the push button and either enables the push button to pivot outwards or limits the pivoting capability of the push button to the extent necessary for operating the switch, and in such a manner that the screw holes are located in a section of the lower part which is not accessible even when the push button is pivoted out. <IMAGE>
