In an item of upholstered furniture which can be used selectively as a bed or seat, the surrounding construction consisting of a plurality of boards is to be joined together by attachment elements, the intention being for the boards to be upholstered and provided with covers. The attachment elements consist of mounting angles which are held by screws, are reinforced by transverse deformations and connect the boards to one another, while the covers receiving the cushions are fitted at their edges with insertion members which interact with groove-like depressions which are worked into the boards in the attachment regions. As a result, the assembly of the surrounding construction is simplified and the upholstery or covering of the boards is improved. In order to prevent undesired emergence of the insertion members from the groove-like depressions, said groove-like depressions form different angles with the surfaces of the boards. The insertion members advantageously consist of spring-like plastic strips which are bonded or sewn firmly at the edges of the covers.
