Disperse dyes of 3-dicyanomethylidene-2,3-dihydorthiophene 1,1-dioxides(I; R = a group derived from benzene, indoline, or hydroquinoline; Z = the atoms required to complete an aromatic ring) were prepd. by condensation of II with aldehyde. Thus, condensation of 3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1-benzo thiophene 1,1-dioxide with malononitrile in EtOH contg. piperidine and HOAc gave 3-(dicyanomethylene)-2,3-dihydrobenzo thiophene 1,1-dioxide, which was subsequently treated with C6H4(CH3)N1(CH2)5Me 2 and HCON(Me)2 to form III, a brilliant blue dye for polyester fibers.
