A hybrid electric vehicle includes at least one electric generator 123B,123C driveable by an engine 121 for stored energy recharging. When a controller 140 receives a signal indicating a required hybrid driving mode, it determines which powertrain operating mode is appropriate at a given moment, taking into account a state of charge and a reference value of state of charge. The powertrain modes include an engine charging mode and an electric vehicle mode in which the engine 121 is switched off and the vehicle is driven by electric means. The reference value of state of charge is set to one of a plurality of different values in depending on the required hybrid driving mode. A cost function may also be taken into account, which may be determined from a fuel consumption rate, an emission rate and/or noise generated. The vehicle may include plural electric machines 123B,123C and a charge storage module 150 having a battery and inverter. A series mode may be provided in addition to a parallel mode.
