Ignition of explosive charge by shock wave through sealed wall - where shock wave drives particles off wall so they enter and explode second igniter charge

The process and device employ an igniter plug contg. two cavities (a,b) sepd. by a solid wall. Cavity(a) contains an initial detonator charge(a1), whereas cavity(b) contains a second pyrotechnic charge (b1). The surface of the wall facing charge(b1) is coated with a layer of particles with a specific grain size. When charge(a1) is detonated it creates a shock wave in the wall, so the particles are driven off the wall and into charge(b1), where the kinetic energy in the particles causes the rapid combustion or deflagration of charge(b1). Charge(b1) is pref. used to detonate a larger explosive charge in a shell or rocket. Process is used esp. the detonation of propellants used in space travel.
