A description is given of a breakdown and transportation vehicle which is suitable for laterally loading and unloading and for transporting cars or the like. For this purpose, a longitudinal carriage and, fastened thereon, a transverse carriage are provided on a loading area of the transportation vehicle, the longitudinal carriage being displaceable in the loading area in the longitudinal direction and the transverse carriage being displaceable transversely to the longitudinal direction. Fastened to the transverse carriage is a lifting device which has supporting arms with which it is possible to reach under a parked car by correspondingly displacing longitudinal and transverse carriages in the manner of a forklift truck. By operating the lifting gear and correspondingly displacing transverse and longitudinal carriages, the car is brought onto the loading area from the side. The entire pick-up process can take place in a very short time, it not being possible for the paint or other parts of the car to be damaged, this being the major advantage of this novel transportation vehicle over known transportation vehicles.
