摘要 <p>Novel phenol derivs. have the formula (I) where R and R' are 1-9C alkyl; n and m are 0 or 1; X is a simple bond or a gp. of formula CO or a gp. II-X where Y is NO2, or X is (XI) where Y is H; it being excluded that where X is a simple bond, R and R' are CH3 or C4H9. They are prepd. by acylating a phenol of formula (XII) with an acid chloride of formula, R-O(n)-X-Cl in pyridine at room temp. Prods. are useful in liq. crystal materials having negative dielectric anisotropy, pref. less than or equal to -6, and low frequency sign inversion. The materials are useful in opto-electronic systems, esp. information handling systems. The use of the above cpds. in liq. crystal materials is claimed where Y may also be a CN gp.</p>
