The gathering implement includes a breaking rotor (7) which is mounted on a mobile chassis (25) drawn by a tractor. A gathering rotor (1) with raking tines (1a) is also mounted on the chassis and between the two rotors are a pair of compacting rollers and a pair of horizontal cylinders, which cooperate to advance the material through the machine. The compacted straw is fed to the breaking-up rotor which is fed to the breaking-up rotor which has peripheral blades to chop the material finely. The treated straw is then blown out through a vertical chimney into a hopper (11) mounted on the chassis.
