The invention relates to a device and a method for increasing the service life of kiln wall linings of rotary kilns in the cement industry and a rotary kiln equipped with such a device. The main feature of the device according to the invention is that it has indicating members fastened on the kiln shell and on the running ring, and has sensors arranged along the path of movement of the same. The sensors are connected to an electronic evaluation unit, which includes a power supply section, a pulse generator, a memory and an evaluation unit. The central unit is connected to the output unit or to the indicator. The main feature of the rotary kiln according to the invention is that the kiln is provided with indicating members fastened on the kiln shell and sensors arranged along the paths of movement of the same. In the case of the method according to the invention, the lag of the running ring during one revolution of the kiln with respect to the travel of the kiln shell can be determined by means of the indicating members arranged on the shell of the rotary kiln and on the running ring and by means of the sensors lying along the paths of movement. Furthermore, from time to time the constant ratio s/n of gap to lag is determined. The size of the gap can be continuously determined from this ratio; it is kept within a range between 1.5 and 20 mm, advantageously between 0.5 and 2.0 parts per thousand of the outside diameter of the rotary kiln by intervening in the kiln operation. The operation of the rotary kiln is preferably controlled by altering the firing, the raw material charge or the shell cooling.
