PURPOSE:To obtain a low price polarization separating element with small size and light weight and small transmission loss, without lens, by inserting an optical film having polarization separating characteristics between bonding tilt end planes of two optical waveguide plates. CONSTITUTION:Opposing end planes of optical waveguide plates 21 and 22 such as glass are formed into a tilt end plane shaped and polished vertically on the respective upper plane and with an angle in the range of 40-50 deg. to the center axis of the plates 21 and 22. A dielectric multilayered film 23 having a polarization function is inserted between the tilt planes and bonded. Thus, a light propagating in the plate 21 is separated into a reflection polarization S shown in two dot chain lines and polarization light P transmitting in the film 23 as shown in three-dot chain lins at the film 23. Thus, optical circuit components for optical isolators and optical switches can be constituted with a small size by using the polarization separating element with less transmission loss and small size. |
