A vehicle constituting a fifth wheel can be automatically decoupled from a second vehicle constituting a towing vehicle. Furthermore, automatic coupling of the fifth wheel to the towing vehicle is possible. For decoupling, use is made of an inclined ramp onto which jockey wheels, fitted in the front region of the fifth wheel, run. The coupling of the fifth wheel is effected by simple bevelling of an edge on the rear end of the towing vehicle. If the latter is reversed under the fifth wheel, the pivot pin of the latter slides up the incline until it reaches the planar pivot surface of the towing vehicle, and there slides into the pin hole provided for this purpose. Both procedures are carried out using a ramp which can be moved back and forth and, when the fifth wheel moves backwards, comes into contact with the latter when the jockey wheels run up the inclined ramp for uncoupling. After removing the towing vehicle, the ramp is moved forwards by the delayed action of a spring, in doing so taking the fifth wheel along with it, with the result that said fifth wheel leaves the inclined ramp. Thereafter, the fifth wheel can be connected to the towing vehicle again by reversing said towing vehicle.
