Preparation of a 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene malonic-acid dialkyl ester for use as an agricultural or horticultural fungicide and as a therapeutic agent for treating hepatic diseases can be prepared by a new process comprising reacting a dialkyloxycarbonylketene dimercaptide with a 1,1-dihalogenoethylene, according to the formula: <CHEM> in which M = alkali metal or ammonium X = halogen R and R min = lower alkyl.
