A gas-shielded arc welding method is described in which a non-consumable electrode (2) and a filler wire (6) are respectively connected to independent DC power sources and the non-consumable electrode (2) is located in a preceding position, with the filler wire (6) being fed in from behind the electrode (2). The non-consumable electrode (2) is held in a forwardiy tilted position to form an angle THETA 2 smaller than 85 DEG with a workpiece (1), and the non-consumable electrode (2) and filler wire (6) are supplied with inverse electric currents of opposite polarity thereby to control the arc direction for formation of sound joints. A welding apparatus is also described, which is capable of effecting arc extension control and oscillation simultaneously.
