In a hand-operated label printing machine, a printing press. buffer(19) comprises a spring-actuated engaging member(31) formed in the hand lever(8) and a cooperating checking shoulder(26) which is formed in the main body(2) of the machine. An inclined groove(27) leads to the shoulder(26). The shoulder is brought into disengageable engagement with the spring-actuated engaging member for moderating the printing pressure. When the spring-actuated engaging member rides over the checking shoulder, the printing head is actuated.
