A machine for forming spur gear wheels with inner and/or outer teeth has a cutting head which can be used with both milling and hobbing cutters and a workpiece support table which is rotatable via changeable gear wheels. The driving motor (41) for the cutter (52) is carried by the cutting head (32) and such motor (41) can be used simply to drive the cutter, as in the case of a milling procedure, or to drive the cutter and at the same time the table, via an insertable gearing connection (54) and the changeable gear wheels in the case of a hobbing procedure.
