Heat exchanger of thin metal plates in foam insulated casing - opt. using melt adhesive joints and rigid impermeable crosslinked foam

In a heat exchanger made from a series of metal plates having offset ends which engage the ends of adjacent plates (4) head to tail in a concertina structure and which incorporate embossed slots to define chimneys (14) for fluid streams (16/17/18/19) moving countercurrent between the plates, the borders of the plates are opt. set into a layer of rigid impermeable foam insulation lining a rigid casing which encloses the stick of assembled plates. The insulating lining (52) in the casing is pref. made of epoxy, phenolic or prepolymer resin reinforced internally pref. by a metallic or synthetic textile mesh enclosed throughout the casing wall and/or metal angle profiles incorporated along each edge of the casing. Mutual support of adjacent plates by each other and/or the lining allows relatively thin plates, e.g. of 0.2 mm thick Al sheet, to be used, to save wt. without loss of rigidity.
