A circular flange is welded automatically to the foot of a polygon column, mfg. metal posts or pylons. A motorised cradle supports and rotates the column about its longitudinal axis together with the applied flange. An automatic welding head is guided uniformly along the joint line between column and flange, to lay down a weld. The head has a follower on the perimeter surface of the column, controlling the cradle motor to turn column and flange, step by step, through successive angles, corresponding to the columns faces. The follower also detects the approach of the welding head to the angle at the end of a run, and stops rotation as the succeeding face becomes horizontal. A slow and difficult manual operation is replaced by a rapid and reliable automatic process.
|
