The invention provides a cutting apparatus for the opening of envelopes which are conveyed at high speed in installations for the opening and distribution of post. The cutting apparatus works independently of the type and properties of the paper of the envelopes. The hollow cutting block contains a knife or a disc provided with teeth, which is rotatably mounted in a cavity which is under vacuum, and projects at an adjustable height from a slit. An electrical heating device for burning off the coating or impregnation of paper in the region of the incision into the envelopes is provided upstream of the cutting block. The apparatus according to the invention is suitable for fast-operating post-opening apparatuses.
