It is the object of the invention to provide a compensating arrangement, with the aid of which not only are first and second order inertia or centrifugal forces fully compensated but damaging effects due to piston side forces are completely eliminated. This object is achieved by the fact that the working units of the machine are arranged in pairs and in mirror-symmetry to a plane of symmetry extending parallel to the crankshaft axis and are operated in such a way that their crankshafts rotate synchronously to one another but in the opposite direction of rotation and that each working unit is assigned at least one counterweight attached to the crankshaft and at least one balancing shaft equipped with a balance weight, driven by the crankshaft and situated parallel to it, the counterweights and balance weights of one pair of working units having the same masses and likewise being arranged in mirror symmetry to the plane of symmetry. <IMAGE>
