A test instrument for telephone sets and lines in branch exchanges or exchange systems, which contains several instruction stages for triggering various test functions such as line monitoring, set testing, determination of the dialling method, the programs of which can be called up from a program memory. A keypad accessible to the user contains keys which are allocated to the instruction stages for the individual test functions. The test instrument also contains combined measuring and test circuits for optional use in the respective test function, which can be connected to the line to be tested via a common switch-over stage and a plug coming from this stage and plugged into the main distribution frame of the telephone system. A processor operates in conjunction with the program memory to run through the test program called up in the respective instruction stage. The processor is connected via peripheral drivers both for controlling the measuring and test circuits and for receiving their data and for controlling the common switch-over stage and a display device.
