Automatic switching over of motor vehicle headlights between main beam and dipped light is achieved in that the illumination from the headlights of an oncoming vehicle is sensed by a sensor which transmits its output signals to a switch-over and holding device via suitable amplifying means, which switch-over and holding device, on being triggered, automatically switches over the supply of current during an impressed holding time from the main beam circuit to the dipped light circuit and after the holding time performs an automatic resetting.
