The invention relates to a device for gripping, transporting and laying pipes, having a hook-like gripper which has a supporting leg, insertable into the pipe to be gripped, and a load leg which is parallel to the supporting leg at a distance from it and can be moved over the pipe to be gripped. The supporting leg and the load leg are rigidly connected to one another at one end via a web. A suspension device which can be connected to a load hook is linked to the load leg above the area of the centre of gravity of the load to be picked up. In order to be able to transport and lay pipes with a high margin of safety, it is proposed that two hook-like grippers be linked at a distance from one another, by their webs, to a cross piece in such a way as to be pivotable about parallel axes running in the longitudinal direction of the supporting and load legs of the two grippers, and that lever arms be fastened to the load legs of the two grippers. Two tension members which can be connected to a load hook are linked to the lever arms.
