To store pallets, carriages (1) which can be moved into the shelves (15) on a so-called lift-over device (3) are provided. As an improved drive for these carriages (1), a slide (11) is allocated to the carriage (1). The slide (11) runs in the carriage and can be displaced via drive pinions (13) forming an integral part of the main drive and meshing with a toothed rack (5) allocated to the slide (11), the slide stroke (A) being superimposed by a synchronous carriage stroke (B) which is produced by an auxiliary transmission (6, 7) acting on the carriage (1). <IMAGE>
