Ethyleneglycol derivatives, inclusive of salts thereof, which have the formula:

wherein R<1> is C8-26 aliphatic hydrocarbon residue; R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are each hydrogen or lower alkyl which may be substituted, or -@R<2>R<3>R<4> represents cyclic ammonio, exhibit inhibitory activity to multiplication of tumor cells and antimicrobial activity.
