<p>A biochemical agent is described for facilitating detection of immunological agglutination reactions in liquid suspensions, in particular red blood cell suspensions. The reagent comprises from 0.1 to 1 g/l of a protein-compatible, water soluble, nonionic surface-active polyoxyalkylene ether or ester, and from about 0.1 to about 1.0 g/l of a protein-compatible water-soluble anionic detergent, dissolved in a buffered isotonic aqueous saline solution. When added to an agglutination reaction mixture, the biochemical agent increases the sensitivity of the agglutination reaction and promotes fast settling out of agglutinated matter from the reaction mixture, whilst non-agglutinated matter is maintained in suspension and can easily be computerised. An apparatus particularly for use in blood grouping, comprises a loading station (10) for identified carrier racks (18) of test tubes (19), a dispenser (11) for antisera, a mixer (13), a photometric reader (16), an unloading station (17) and a print out unit (26).</p> |
