<p>Grab appts. for seizing barrels with highly radioactive contents, is described, the barrels opt. being open or closed with a lid, and carrying on the internal surface of the barrel below the lid a circular collar, the lid having in its middle a mushroom shaped carrying button beneath which the claws of several arms of the grab engage. The grab appts. includes a hub and a shaft which on translatory movement of one w.r.t. the other can be screwed by means of command grooves provided with balls turning in the grooves, in the various stop positions. These grab arms are pivoted and move by one end about the hub, and the shaft operates by pivoting by means of a lifting arm pivoted on it, at the middle of the grab arms by separating them. The grab appts. is used for handling barrels filled with nuclear waste embedded in solidified molten glass. The appts. can be operated for some of its movements under its own weight saving in energy costs. The operation of the grab is very sure and has a good central guide block so that the robust, high strength construction is largely free from wear.</p> |
