PURPOSE:To project a large image on a large size screen even with small-sized, light weight constitution by projecting an image of an even-numbered filed on the screen by a liquid crystal panel and a projection optical system, and composing projection light of an odd-numbered field and projection light of an even-numbered field as mutu ally orthogonal polarized components. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal panel is constituted by sticking a front polarizing plate 11 and a rear polarizing plate 12, sticking two polarizing plates so that light of a P polarized component is transmitted through a liquid crystal panel 1 for displaying odd-numbered fields, and also sticking two polarizing plates so that light of an S polarized component is transmitted through a liquid crystal panel 3 for displaying even-numbered fields. The liquid crystal display panels 1 and 3 which display the odd-numbered and even-numbered fields are constituted in a dot matrix, and each picture element operates as an optical switch to limit the quantity of light transmission, thereby displaying an image and characters. Further, a color display is made by provid ing a color filter to each picture element. Light transmitted through the liquid crystal panels 1 and 3 is incident on projection optical systems 2 and 4 and enlarged and projected on the screen. Consequently, a large-screen image of meter size is obtained by small-sized, lightweight display device. |
