<p>The type carrier wheel for a typewriter, has radial arms (2) each with a head (3) carrying a character. To release the head from its spindle, a special tool is used, designed to spring apart the two arms (9) of a U shaped retaining spring (10). These two arms fit into grooves across the top of the spindle when in a locked position. This tool (14) has a finger (15) projecting forwards each side from a threaded sleeve, spaced apart to fit around a boss (5) on top of the type wheel. Between them is a wedge shaped portion (16) whose sloping sides force the arms apart as they are guided by the fingers. Each sloping side incorporates a recess (17) to retain a tip (9a) of the spring.</p> |
