PURPOSE:To obtain collagen for medical use, having excellent characteristics such as absorbability to the living body, rate of blood coagulation, maintenance of the safety, and standardization and reproducibility of the product, by dispersing purified collagen in an acidic aqueous solution having a specific pH, and irradiating the dispersion with ultrasonic radiation at a specific irradiation dose. CONSTITUTION:A collagen for medical use having the following characteristics: main constituent amino acid residue per 1,000 residues, glycine 312-340, proline 119-138, hydroxyproline 94-100, and tyrosine 2.6-5.5; denaturation temperature to gelatin, 31-40 deg.C; and S constant, 1.62-1.12. The above collagen can be prepared by dispersing a purified collagen having no ultraviolet absorption between 250 and 290nm wavelength and a lipid-content of <=0.5wt%, and obtained by the conventional extraction process from crude collagen, in an acidic aqueous solution of 2-4pH, and irradiating the dispersion with ultrasonic radiation (preferably 17.5-24.5kHz) at a rate of 108-2.5X10<5>kcal/l. |
