Process for the stacking of boards or the like in a parallel arrangement next to one another, in which boards successively conveyed individually transversely to their longitudinal direction are combined to form a board layer of smaller width then that of the stack and are brought above the stack as a result of a horizontal movement, the boards of each layer being removed from one another before, during or after the horizontal movement, until the outer edges of the two outermost boards of the board layer are at a spacing corresponding to the width of the stack. Apparatus for the stacking of boards or the like which are delivered transversely to their longitudinal direction, having a conveying device which feeds the individually delivered boards to a carrier device (108) which brings the boards above the stack in the course of a horizontal movement and which, for this purpose, has a plurality of mutually parallel horizontal rails (109) which are preferably arranged in pairs and to which are attached displaceably the lifting or holding members (110, 111, 112) which are equipped with suction cups connectable to a vacuum source (117) and which are adjustable in their position along the rails carrying them by servomotors (116) by means of connecting members, such as endless chains (114) or the like, the servomotors being controlled by means of a computing unit as a function of the width of the individual boards (119) of a board layer (120), of the sum of these board widths and of the width of the stack (122). <IMAGE>
