In order to obtain good efficiency in internal combustion engines, a compact combustion chamber (which permits a high compression), large inlet and exhaust cross-sections, low mechanical stressing and good swirling are needed. In our principle, this is achieved in that the combustion chamber is opened and closed by only one valve. The primary control is performed by way of a control sleeve running round the valve, which is driven by the camshaft at the same rotation speed. When clean air is drawn in, that is to say direct injection, in the rotating control sleeve a spin is imparted to the air flow, which ensures good swirling during compression. At the top dead centre piston position the control sleeve, the inlet and exhaust always overlap, so that air flows through the cylinder head, thereby ensuring a thermal balance with simultaneous improvement of the exhaust quality. A diaphragm in the inlet further improves the charge. This control principle is suitable for all 4-stroke engines, especially in conjunction with turbochargers.
